Parliament passes tax licences
RULES for companies operating in Slovakia will change again as parliament passed the amendment to the law on income tax, which includes the reduction of corporate taxes from 23 to 22 percent and the introduction of so-called tax licences. The opposition has criticised the changes, calling them unconstitutional, the SITA newswire reported on December 3.
Sadiki phone call with Harabin confirmed
SUPREME Court President Štefan Harabin did have a phone conversation with alleged drug lord Baki Sadiki on August 5, 1994, but they discussed only “private matters”, the General Prosecutor’s Office confirmed before the Bratislava Regional Court. This stems from the valid court verdict awarding Harabin €150,000 in compensation, the Sme daily reported in its December 3 issue.
FinMin expects more income from taxes
THE GOVERNMENT expects to collect millions of euros more in taxes and levies than it had previously anticipated. The state treasury raised its estimated revenue in taxes and levies compared to September's forecast for 2013 by €154 million or 0.2 percent of GDP. It expects similarly better tax revenue for the years 2014-2016, with its estimated revenue in taxes and levies increasing by €375 million in 2014, €361 million in 2015 and €365 million in 2016.
Vareha hospitalised; no end in sight for his case
MIKULÁŠ Vareha, a businessman who was tried in the biggest case of tax fraud in the history of Slovakia, was hospitalised in the Trenčín hospital for prison inmates due to sudden health problems, the SITA newswire reported.
Banská Bystrica: No documents shredded, employee asserts
THE EMPLOYEE of the Banská Bystrica Region Office who supposedly informed the campaign team of far-right extremist and governor-elect Marian Kotleba about the shredding of sensitive documents shortly after the regional election, denies that she ever informed anyone about such a move, the TASR newswire reported on December 2.
Three new judicial candidates for ECHR nominated
THE JUDCIAL Council selected three candidates for the judge’s post at the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR), which Slovakia is required to provide to the Council of Europe, the TASR newswire reported on December 2.
Deficit lower than expected
THE STATE budget in Slovakia ended 11 months into this year with a deficit of €1.963 billion, which is €780.5 million (28 percent) lower than this time last year, the Finance Ministry informed, as reported by the SITA newswire.
Trnka no longer prosecutor
FORMER general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka might have to leave the prosecution altogether. As punishment for his role in the Glance House case, a disciplinary commission punished Trnka on November 29 by deciding that he can no longer work as a prosecutor.
Slovakia will need immigrants, prognosis shows
SLOVAKIA may not be as dependent on immigrants as certain older EU-member countries, where a freeze on immigration would reduce the overall population by tens of millions by 2060, but it is certain that immigrants will play an important role in Slovakia in the future, mainly when it comes to the workforce, Martina Lubyová from the Slovak Academy of Sciences' (SAV) Prognostics Institute, told the TASR newswire.Currently Slovakia is not a destination for asylum seekers or labour migrants, who pay taxes and contribute towards the payroll-deduction system.
Sýkorovci get stiff punishments
THE SUPREME Court handed down tough sentences to four members of the Sýkorovci gang. They were sent to prison after the Supreme Court upheld the earlier verdicts of the Specialised Penal Court in Pezinok, the TASR newswire reported.
Opposition to contest tax licenses at Constitutional Court
OPPOSITION parties grouped within the People’s Platform and extra-parliamentary New Majority-Agreement (NOVA) are taking a coordinated course of action to prevent the passing of new tax licenses, the TASR newswire reported on November 29.

SLOVAKIA’S Smer-led parliament overrode presidential vetoes on a pair of laws giving extra muscle to unions and adding a work requirement for welfare recipients.

Long Distance Calls become shorter
EVERY year works by Slovak artists who have established themselves abroad are exhibited in Bratislava. As part of the Henkel Slovensko Slovensku project, the 14th such exhibition has opened in the Bratislava City Gallery (GMB), this time presenting the works of Jozef Bajus, titled Long Distance Calls.

Interest in university degrees drops
LAST year saw a drop in the interest of young people in university studies. This result comes as part of the annual ranking of Slovak universities by the Academic Ranking and Rating Agency (ARRA), whose 2013 edition was presented on November 27.
