SLOVAKIA has sold emissions allowances, known as EUAs (European Union allowances), worth €47 million so far this year, permitting the buyers to emit 10.863 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. This comes out to an average price of €4.33 per tonne, Environment Ministry spokesperson Maroš Stano told the SITA newswire.
The ministry plans to sell EUAs for an additional 3.183 million tonnes of emissions. The current market price is €5.1 per tonne, which is a drop from the price at the end of 2012 of about €7. Thus, the ministry will not obtain the planned sum of €105 million. Proceeds should have gone to the environment fund to support so-called green projects. The ministry will patch up the gap in the fund from its own proceeds, which are to develop better than originally projected.
