The art category design evoked great expectations in 2015, as it has been added to five already existing categories, the foundation explained in a press release.
“The expert jury decided to award Mistrík and Csino for their publication Cvernovka, as it is not just a unique graphic-art feat, but also a very detailed and attractive summary of the Bratislava phenomenon called Cvernovka,” said Zuzana Böhmerová, manager of the foundation and strategic sponsoring.
Cvernovka was a thread factory founded at the break of the 19th and 20th centuries, and it operated until the 2000s. Recently, it has become a creative hub for informal artists, startupers and young creative Slovaks.
“This is a unique illustration especially in the current context,” Martin Mistrík said about the card’s design.
It shows the view from the current Dulovo Square towards Páričkova Street, while also the original buildings of the factory can be seen, including the spinning mill, the dye-house, the boiler house and also the villa of the director. Chimneys in the background remind of the fact that once there used to be a massive industrial development zone of Bratislava.
“We should not forget this part of history, despite that there is nothing left here, apart from Cvernovka itself,” Mistrík continued. “We found the illustration in one of the boxes, hidden and lost inside the factory rooms.”
This is the thirteenth special limited edition card issued by Tatra Banka. Previous cards were dedicated to Slovak personalities.
