Rádiová Street in Bratislava's Ružinov borough is home to a curious case of a pizza parlour called Roberto. Several years ago, when its owner wanted to expand their business, a covered terrace was added to the restaurant.
The fact that a public light pole stood in the way did not matter; it became part of the terrace interior.
As it turned out in 2016, during a check a Ružinov Construction Office employee discovered that the terrace was built without a building permit and operated without an approval.
When this happens, an owner can apply for both, which in the case of the parlour did happen. However, the papers were not complete, so the process dragged on. The situation was complicated by the fact that the land owner was not the same person as the building owner.
In 2017, the office called on the company that built the terrace to provide missing paperwork within 90 days.
Now, after seven years of waiting, the office initiated a process to demolish the illegal building, arguing that according to the law, if an owner "does not submit the required documents within a certain period of time, or if it is proven that a building is in conflict with public interest, the office will order the removal of the building."
The parlour is currently closed.
