Bratislava will host the Consumer Summit, a high-level ministerial meeting on the topic of dual food quality on October 13. Among its scheduled guests are Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlowá, EC commissioner for Justice Consumer Protection and Rights and Gender Equality Věra Jourová and Slovak Prime Minster Robert Fico.
"I consider it a huge success for Slovakia to get this topic on the international table," said Fico
He expects two things from the summit.
“I expect that Commissioner Věra Jourová, who represents the European Commission and has an understanding of this problem, will announce that new ways exist to explain the existing legal norms that will enable us to act more strictly against companies that behave in such a way,” said Fico as cited by the SITA newswire. “The second thing I expect is that a common methodology for comparing products will be agreed.”
Fico believes that Slovakia has brought the theme of equal food quality into the spotlight despite the fact that some months ago larger countries just brushed this issue aside. Today EC President Jean-Claude Juncker as well as French President Emmanuel Macron are also speaking about the need for equal quality.
Fico pointed out that many international companies are changing packaging in case the quality of their products in individual countries differs and are taking significant steps to improve the situation.
