On Saturday, 12 October, the Old Market Hall in Bratislava will be aglow with colour, rhythm and flavour as the community gathers for a day-long celebration of India’s most cherished holiday — the Festival of Lights. The event promises an immersive journey into Indian culture, with live performances, food, shopping and interactive experiences for all ages.
“Diwali is a festival celebrated every year to mark the return of King Ram (Raam) of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over Raavan, the demon king,” organisers explained. “It symbolises the triumph of truth over falsehood, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.”
This year’s celebration holds special significance for the Indian diaspora in Slovakia, which has now become the second-largest non-European community in the country.

Doors open at midday
Entry is free and all are welcome
“For Indians living abroad, it is essential to experience a sense of home,” the organisers added. “Such events also create opportunities for newcomers to connect both with Slovak people and with the established Indian community.”
The stage will come alive with an eclectic line-up: classical Indian dance presented by Sharanya and Diantha alongside Denisa Nepali, and energetic Bollywood numbers performed by Lydia Madhuri, Bhumika, Irene Razon and Zuzana Antalekova. Vienna-based Indian band Vayu will bring its signature sound, while dance workshops led by Denisa Nepali invite attendees to join the movement.
First-time visitors will also be treated to authentic Indian cuisine, Henna art, and a marketplace filled with vibrant colours and aromas.
“Indian food and dance performances remain the most popular attractions of the Diwali festival,” said representatives from the Indian community.
Henna artists Meera and Madhu will offer intricate designs, while experts from Unique Unity Together, Raj Zdravia, Mantra Ayurveda Wellness and Planet Ayurveda will share insights into Ayurveda. Travel company Travego Tour will present opportunities to explore India firsthand.
No festival would be complete without food — and Diwali delivers. From crispy samosas to fragrant curries, visitors can enjoy dishes from Royal Kashmir, Anand Ashram, Dosa & Samosa, Red Chilli and Punjabi Dhaba. Shoppers can browse Indian groceries, textiles, jewellery and handicrafts from Bite Globe, Pulwarma, Avatar Shop, Satva, Laxmi Boutique, Echoes of Art and Macrame by Ani.
The event will be hosted by Jaiwanti, guiding audiences through an atmosphere of joy, light and togetherness.
Families, friends and neighbours are invited to take part in this festive gathering — a celebration not only of Diwali’s luminous traditions but also of the community spirit that makes them shine far from home.
