Two years of food price hikes have caused price tags in Slovak shops to be nearly the same as in Western European countries, where purchasing power is significantly higher.
Food is more expensive than in Slovakia in only 12 European countries. If we do not count Estonia, which belongs to the post-Soviet bloc, these are exclusively countries of Western Europe. Food is already 5 percent more expensive in Slovakia than the EU average.
Although food prices rose everywhere, they were slightly more pronounced in Slovakia. This has caused people in Slovakia to pay comparable prices for food as people in Sweden or in neighbouring Austria, where the average net salary is 2.5 times higher.
The year-on-year growth of food prices in Slovakia slowed to 8.9 percent in October. It’s the first time since March 2022 that it reached single digits.
