AVERAGE motor fuel prices have continued to grow in Slovakia, recently hitting record levels. The average price of the best-selling 95 Natural petrol is currently around €1.44 per litre and the average price of diesel is around €1.35 per litre, the natankuj.sk fuel-price monitoring website wrote on March 14.
Petrol prices rose twice between late February and mid March, while diesel prices were hiked three times. But the development of oil prices and oil products on stock exchanges as of Monday, March 14, suggested a halt in the upward trend.
After the latest price hikes, 95 Natural petrol rose to an average of €1.445 per litre, significantly above the historical record from summer 2005, when it hit €1.410 per litre, partly as a result of the effects of Hurricane Katrina in the USA. Summer 2008 also witnessed high petrol prices, of up to €1.370 per litre. Over the last few years Slovaks paid least for petrol in early 2009, when 95 Natural petrol sold for €0.980 per litre.
Diesel prices have not broken their previous record yet. In summer 2008 drivers in Slovakia had to pay €1.480 per litre for diesel. On March 13 the average diesel price was €1.344 per litre.
