PRIME Minister Iveta Radičová lit a replica of a historical gas lamp in the courtyard of the Slovak Cabinet Office on March 19 to mark the 155th anniversary of the gas industry in Slovakia. The first gas lamps appeared in Bratislava in 1856, the TASR newswire wrote. Radičová noted that a significant pipeline now crosses Slovakia, carrying gas from east to west.
The president of the Slovak Gas and Oil Association, Pavol Janočko, confirmed that Slovakia has the second highest access of households and other gas consumers to natural gas in Europe.
“We have the biggest capacity in terms of natural gas transit and we carry the biggest amount of Russian natural gas to western Europe,” said Janočko. He stressed that in future the association intends to promote natural gas as the most ecological fossil fuel. The planned connection of Slovak and Hungarian pipelines may be a driving force for further development in the usage of Slovakia’s gas infrastructure.
