No insurance for gravestones

THE RECENT strong winds that hit the High Tatras in the first half of April damaged more than forests and roofs. A cemetery in the town of Vysoké Tatry had more than 60 gravestones damaged or completely destroyed, the Sme daily wrote.

Many people whose relatives are buried in the cemetery are in despair because they have no insurance and town officials said its funds are needed to repair municipal property.

None of three largest insurance companies in Slovakia offer insurance for graves or gravestones.

“We had this product several years ago,” Lucia Muthová, spokesperson of Allianz-Slovenská Poisťovňa, told the daily. "But because the price seemed to be too high people stopped being interested in it. Now we do not insure graves and gravestones.”

Generali Slovensko does not offer insurance on graves and gravestones either.

After their recent experiences, some people now appear more interested in insurance for gravestones.
