PREPARATION for the building of a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice follows the plan approved by shareholders of the Nuclear Energy Company of Slovakia (JESS). Štefan Šabík, chairman of the JESS BoD, reported about the course of the project at the conference Safe Energy Supply SES 2013 in Bratislava on September 26, the TASR newswire reported.
The company is currently working on preparation of the environmental impact assessment study for the plant. Recently, JESS signed a contract with the company AMEC to elaborate the EIA study, and the assessment process should be complete by the middle of 2016.
“During the environmental impact assessment our natural communication partners will be local administrations, state administration bodies, expert institutions and oversight bodies,” said Šabík. “We will have public meetings, cross-border public hearings and after the assessment is over, the Slovak Environment Ministry will elaborate a final stance on the project.”
The Slovak state Nuclear and Decommissioning Company (JAVYS) and the Czech energy group ČEZ founded JESS in late 2009, with JAVYS holding 51 percent and ČEZ holding the rest. While ČEZ wants to focus on activities in the Czech Republic, it is testing interest in its share in JESS.
Based on the plans so far, the new nuclear facility should have an installed capacity of up to 2,400 MW, and it should be put into operation after 2025.
In Jaslovské Bohunice the major electricity producer, Slovenské Elektrárne, operates a nuclear power station consisting of two units. Another three units are being decommissioned.
