The number of nurses in Slovakia is declining, whereas the ranks of people of post-productive age are bound to increase in the future. More nurses mean more saved lives, according to the message of a campaign soon to be waged by nurses’ trade unions.
The campaign will be launched a year after nurses filed their resignations en masse, and it is due to be disseminated via the internet, news service outlets and brochures, the TASR newswire reported.
All facts included in it have been statistically verified and confirmed, say the unions.
“We’ll draw attention to the fact that the shortage of nurses in the system is partly due to inadequate remuneration,” said Monika Kavecká, head of the Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives, as quoted by TASR. “Our articles will also raise awareness in the regions and at hospitals and medical facilities.”
In this way nurses want to prevent their grievances from fading from the public eye.
“Since the mass resignation there has been no progress whatsoever in addressing the reasons why the nurses tendered their resignations in the first place,” said Kavecká, as quoted by TASR, adding that the situation in Slovakia should not be underestimated.
She pointed out that the number of nurses in the neighbouring Czech Republic and Austria is growing.
Various celebrities and health-care figures will lend their support to the campaign, TASR wrote.
