The event was held on Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, under the title U. S. Steel for Košice, during which the employees of the largest company in eastern Slovakia worked alongside other volunteers in numerous tasks designed to benefit the public.

This year the work of the volunteers was broadened in scope under the auspices of the Košice mayor’s office. The joint concept Together for Košice was the basis for joining with other companies in the volunteer activities, the company wrote in a press release provided to The Slovak Spectator.

U. S. Steel Košice President George F. Babcoke personally joined the event and worked in several places alongside his wife Kathleen.

“It would be easier to simply help these institutions financially,” he said. “But if we contribute our own labour, the help is much more meaningful. In the USA and in Slovakia there are many people who care about others and who do not hesitate to help out. I am proud that our steelmakers are among them.”

The fourth year of the volunteer day started off on Friday morning with the ‘Steelmakers’ Drop of Blood’ call for blood-donors.

Throughout Friday and Saturday company employees brought in unneeded summer clothing, books, towels and bed linen, clean and in good condition, for various facilities run by the Archdiocesan Charity. Former steelmakers, members of the Autumn of Life Civic Association, provided help in this activity.

On Saturday morning volunteers helped with pavement renovation at the Botanical Gardens, cleaning at St. Luke’s Geriatric Institute, classroom door painting at the Elementary School for Disabled Children and renovating the stables at the zoo.

U. S. Steel Košice Volunteer Days are the largest of several volunteer activities which the company organises during the year.
