Slovakia has clear plan to remain "nuclear energy powerhouse"

While Slovakia is now self-sufficient in energy production following the launch of the third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant earlier in 2023, the country will need to continue expanding its nuclear power sources in the years to come, experts say.

​​A fourth block at Mochovce will need to be completed, but new energy generating facilities will also have to come online, either to replace old nuclear power plants or to cover increasing demand for electricity as Slovakia’s industry is decarbonised and transport electrified.

They believe nuclear power will retain a dominant position among the country’s energy mix in future, with plans for the construction of another large nuclear power plant as well as small modular reactors in the pipeline.
