The European bio product market is growing and Slovakia is not an exception. There are farmers producing food with the BIO label as well as shops offering food produced under strict BIO criteria. The country is against the planned relaxing of bio certification rules, fearing a loss of consumer trust towards bio products.
“The consumption of bio foods does not mean only the increased intake of bioactive substances but also a significantly reduced risk of pesticides, nitrates, additives and genetically modified products,” said Daniel Uličný, CEO of the Bionakupy online shop.
Shops with bio products offer quality food, usually from local producers, which does not carry any chemical substances. They also focus on the sustainability of agriculture and protection of the environment.
The BIO label can be found in shops all around the EU. Slovak farmers also provide a wide range of bio products, from milk originating from ecological production, dairy products like yogurts, cheese, sheep milk products, and also eggs, herbs and bee products.
There are several places to buy bio products. Bioalej, a shop with bio food, sells products from Austria, the Czech Republic and also from some seasonal Slovak suppliers. It provides nutritional advice at its brick-and-mortar shop at Jégeho Street in Bratislava. It also runs an online shop. Bionakupy.sk relies solely on online service and relies on verified suppliers in Slovakia and Italy.
