The premises of the former chemical factory Dynamit Nobel, today known under the names Dynamitka or Istrochem, is not only the largest brownfield in Bratislava with a huge environmental burden, but also a promising development area. The borough of Nové Mesto, where premises are located, is aware of its development potential. However, it does not want any development of this area, even though most of the pertinent plots are in private hands.
“We need to look at this location comprehensively, so that we don't see what's happening, for example, on Tupého Street, where new and newer apartment buildings are gradually being built, but somehow amenities and a more conceptual view of the area is missing,” Matúš Čupka, Nové Mesto mayor, told The Slovak Spectator. Individual projects are already beginning to bloom in this area.
Nové Mesto has started cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Slovak University of Technology (FAD STU). More than 120 students of the Institute of Urbanism and Spatial Planning of FAD STU have developed urban design proposals with their visions. Tens of thousands of inhabitants could find housing in the new district.
The borough will use students’ works during the preparation of an urban planning study, which will be the basis for the borough’s application for a change to the city’s zoning plan. It should allow the transformation of the former industrial premises into an urban area.
