THE SLOVAK automotive industry association (ZAP) said that Slovakia had the lowest number of cars per person of all 10 new EU members.
One of the reasons for Slovakia's relative lack of automobiles is their expense, ZAP said.
According to ZAP data, in Slovakia a cheap passenger car costs 28 average monthly wages, while, for example, in Germany a similar car can be bought for four monthly wages, the Slovak economic daily Hospodárske noviny wrote on February 11.
ZAP representatives said that 1.3 million cars were registered in Slovakia, which has 5.3 million inhabitants, yet in the neighbouring Czech Republic, which has twice the population, three times as many cars - 4.3 million - were registered.
The proportion of people per car in the Czech Republic was 2.85, while in Slovakia it was 4.05.
