WHILE it has been complicated to buy music legally on the web in Slovakia, two mainstream services are now available. Apple opened its iTunes multimedia shop on September 28, while Orange Slovensko, the biggest mobile operator in Slovakia, launched its MusicJet service a few days earlier, the Sme daily wrote on October 5.
The difference between the two services is that while Apple sells music to download, MusicJet allows users to listen to music online from the servers of its operator. The service costs about €7 per month.
Orange does not regard its service as being a competitor to iTunes, arguing that while in MusicJet the client pays for access to tunes, iTunes sells songs or albums. MusicJet draws music from the biggest music publishers as well as local players like Supraphon and Opus. It therefore has a rich selection of Czech and Slovak musicians who are not as well represented in iTunes.
