Although central Europe supported Slovakia’s Vice-President for the Energy Union, Maroš Šefčovič, to hold one of the top EU posts after the European Union elections, he was not chosen for any.

Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák believes the bad reputation of the Visegrad countries, four central European countries comprising the V4 group in the region, played its role when important EU posts were being decided

“It is no secret that the image of Visegrad Four within the EU is not good,” Lajčák explained to the TASR newswire. “It is our own fault.”

Bad communication

Nevertheless, the stance towards migration turned out to be right, and the time proved that the V4 views were rational, Lajčák added.

“But the way they were presented, often in a populist and even vulgar way, caused we have a lot of enemies” he said, as quoted by TASR.

Slovakia, which finds itself in a different position in relation to the EU, unlike other countries in central Europe due to being the euro area member, should not therefore prioritise the V4 cooperation over its own interests, Lajčák went on to say.

The EU is vital to Slovakia

“I do not really think we should blindly, in the name of solidarity, go against our interests,” Lajčák claimed, as quoted by TASR.

He also stressed that the European Union is “our vital living space”.

Although the V4 as a regional platform has been useful and beneficial, Lajčák said, Slovakia is fully integrated into the EU.

“Our economy entirely depends on a healthy and successful EU,” he added, as quoted by TASR.
