A NEW Slovak movie entitled Pôvod sveta (The Origin of the World), which was first presented at the International Film Festival Bratislava 2002, is being screened in cinemas across the country.
Using a combination of real actors and animation, it tells the story of the world's creation according to Brazilian mythology. Without any narration, the 22-minute-long film recounts how the god Tupan made the first man in his image and then let him create plants and animals. He also created a woman for him not to be alone. As in Genesis, the god is not pleased by the behaviour of humans and sends a flood to punish them. But with the help of a pig, the people survive and procreate.
The movie's director, Katarína Kerekesová, co-wrote the script with her husband Peter Kerekes.
The shooting of the film took place in a sand mine close to the village of Plavecký Štvrtok, north of Bratislava. Because all the scenes were filmed outside, the filmmakers had only six months, from May to October, to complete the project. The work with large-than-life paper puppets, some taller than three metres, was demanding, as they had to be moved manually.
The film will be presented together with the French movie La Folie... pas du tout (Ľúbi ma, neľúbi ma or He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not) directed by Laetitia Colombani and starring Audrey Tatou.
