BLOSSOMING banana trees, tropical plants and waterlilies in hues of white and red have been drawing visitors to Šafárik University's arboretum in Košice.

The arboretum, covering an area of 30 hectares (74 acres), is one of the largest botanic gardens in Europe. Its tropical plants, growing in huge greenhouses, are at their most beautiful this time of year. Included in the collection are 14 protected species, eight of which are seriously endangered, from the eastern region of Slovakia.
