Slovaks buy expensive cars instead of artwork. But why?

Works of Slovak artists could be the perfect promotion of Slovakia abroad, however, art collection and the art market do not exist in Slovakia .

Only a few days ago, the world was taken by the news that Jeff Koons' ‘Rabbit’ statue had been auctioned for more than €81 million. It thus became the most expensive auctioned artwork of any living artist in history.

“People like scandals,” said Tomáš Umrian, who owns the SODA Gallery. “This is an example of a sophisticated strategy by an artist, as well as the gallerist.”

In fact, only a few artists and gallerists work within figures and turnovers of such large investment colossuses, he added.

“The usual art galleries, first and foremost, try first-class presentations, exhibitions and collaborations with museums to happen through publishing brochures and the like,” added Umrian.
