More success for Juraj Lehotský's Blind Loves. (source: SITA)
THE SLOVAK Film Academy has sent Slepé Lásky (Blind Loves), a successful documentary by Juraj Lehotský, to compete for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
Out of nine films, produced or co-produced by Slovaks over the last 12 months, only four met the criteria: Blind Loves, Démoni (Demons) by Róbert Šveda, Polčas Rozpadu (Half Life) by Vlado Fisher, and Muzika (Music) by Juraj Nvota.
Blind Loves, which tells four stories about blind people and their search for love without indulging in sentimentality, has already garnered numerous awards and acclaim. At the Cannes Film Festival, it received the CICAE Award, which is bestowed by the International Confederation of Art Cinemas.
The film has also been successful on the film festival circuit. In the first week of October, Lehotský took home the prize for best documentary at the Zürich Film Festival. Blind Loves also received a Special Mention in the New Vision section at the Reykjavik International Film Festival, which features work by the world's most promising directors.
By the end of the year the film will have also screened at festivals in Montreal, Haifa, Lisbon, Leipzig, and Stockholm, among others. Next year, it will be shown at festivals in Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Thessaloniki.
