I Walked the Line: My Life with Johnny. Vivian Cash. Simon & Schuster, 2007.

Vivian Cash met Johnny Cash at the age of 17 and they were married for 14 years until their divorce in 1965, during which she gave birth to four daughters. Her memoir entitled ‘I Walked the Line’ is the untold story of love, family and heartbreak in the life of an icon. Vivian chose to keep the details of their marriage break-up secret until the publication of this book. She then decided that the whole story should be told as she neared the end of her life – even the parts at odds with the iconic Cash family image, such as Johnny’s drug problems. Also revealed are the family photographs and pages of unpublished love letters that Johnny agreed should be shared with the world.

An Outcast of the Islands. Joseph Conrad. Oxford University Press, 2009.

An Outcast of the Islands was written in 1896 as the second novel by Polish-born British author Joseph Conrad. It is a tale of intrigue in which love and death are the major players. It is a parable of human frailty – the story of a man unable to understand others and fated never to possess his own soul. This revised edition uses the English first edition text and has a new chronology and bibliography.
