On the weekend of April 21-24, a host of events will be organised for Bratislavans and visitors, while the venues administered by the city will be available free of charge. For some of them, however – e.g. boat trips – it will be necessary to procure tickets in advance due to capacity reasons.
Starting on Thursday, April 21, the Bratislava for Everyone – Open Days of City Administration will offer a book festival, a host of lectures (in Slovak), the Slovakia Cantat 2016 international festival of children, youth and adult choirs (19 choirs from 7 countries), the opening of Primate’s Palace, mayor’s residence and city administration, to the public; rides on historical tram, several concerts, horse races, tarditional crafts market, and also guided city tours on April 23 and 24, in German and English. The tours will take place from 14:00 on, starting from the well in the Primate’s Square.
The venues otherwise requiring admission will be now free of charge, like the Bratislava City Museum and its branches, Bratislava City Gallery at both of its venues, the Bratislava zoo, athletic stadiums, playgrounds, etc. Boat trips and guided rides on the small historical carriage around the city centre will be organised as well. An indoor market will be in the Old Market-hall, while an open one will take place in Jakubovo Square.
In the vicinity, also the tours of Bratislava Water-management Company, Forestry Days in Bratislava urban park and more will take place. In Petržalka-Kopčany, the World-War-II-era cemetery and a wartime bunker will be made accessible for visitors.
Annually more than 150,000 visitors grasp the opportunity and try to either visit some attractions for free, or even get a chance to see some sites otherwise not open – like the St James’ Chapel below SNP Square with an ossuary pointing to a previous older church built on this site.
In the Primate’s Palace, an exhibition lasting until May 10 will commemorate the coronation of Empress Maria Theresa in local St Martin’s Cathedral which took place on June 25, 1741.
On Saturday, April 23, city gates will be symbolically unsealed, launching the 2016 tourist season in the capital. In the afternoon, festive fanfares will resound in the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace.
Admission to all events, as well as the city transport on April 23 and 24 are free. More detailed information can be found at www.citylife.sk, and www.bratislava.sk.
