Bratislava Town Gallery

Jan and Meda Mládek's collection of František Kupka's and Otto Gutfreund's paintings in Washington, comes to Bratislava having been exhibited across the world. A graphic painter and illustrator (1871 - 1957), Kupka is one of the founders of abstract art while sculptor Gutfreund (1889 - 1927) started to apply analytic cubism principles in his sculpture work before World War I. The exhibition runs daily except Mon 10:00-18:00 till June 10, at Pálffy's Palace's on Panská 19. Tel: 5443 3627.

Spanish Embassy film festival

The "Days of Spanish Film" festival in Bratislava April 19 and 20 will showcase six Spanish production movies awarded prestigious international prizes. The schedule for the first day features: Solas (Lone) by Benito Zambrano, at 16:00, depicting the relationship between a mother and her pregnant daughter; Tango by Carlos Saura, at 18:00, is a musical of a filmmaker's life crisis; and in Secretos del Corazón (Heart Secrets) by Montxo Armendáriz, at 20:00, in which a little boy finds he can hear his dead grandfather's voice and sets out to discover why.

The next day's schedule: Páginas de Una Historia, Mensaka (Pages of a History, Mensaka) by Salvador García Ruiz, at 16:00, shows a group of young people in town; El Abuelo (Grandfather) by José Luis Garci, at 18:00, reveals the true heir to an old earl's property; and Los Amantes del Círculo Polar (Lovers of the Polar Circle) by Julio Medem, at 20:45, is a passionate and mysterious love story. Original versions of the films will be shown at Kino Mladosť on Hviezdoslavovo námestie 14, simultaneously translated into Slovak. Tel: 5441 5724.

Italian Institute Film Festival

Storie D'amore Con I Crampi (Cramps' Love Story) by Pino Quartullo is a comedy centred on a woman who plots revenge when her husband leaves her. Film starts at 20:00 on April 18 in Kino Mladosť on Hviezdoslavovo námestie 14. Tel: 5441 0401. In Italian with simultaneous Slovak translation.

April Hash Run

Austrian Culture Centre

The exhibition "Fatigue of Forgotten Nations", running in the western Slovak city of Trnava, shows pictures of Jewish cemeteries in the former Habsburg lands. The exhibition is held at Západoslovenské múzeum (West-Slovak Museum) on Múzejné námestie 3 in Trnava, till April 20.

Social Centre in Piešťany

Myjava dulcimer folk band Myjavská cimbalovka, from western Slovakia, will perform their traditional songs and dances on Friday, April 20 at Congress Hall of Kúpeľný ostrov in Piešťany. Tel: 0838 775 2150.

The Austrian and Goethe Institute

"Die Kulturetechniker", the German duo of artist Martin Hahnemann and cellist Ralf Werner, will perform a literary concert "Der Winkloffelfritze - Bahnhofsszenen im Werk Heinrich Bölls" (Dispatcher - station pictures in Heinrich Böll's work). Böll, the Nobel prize-winning writer, captures the feel of gloom during war as well as presenting humorous satire. The evening starts at 18:00 on April 18 at Mozartova sieň (Mozart Hall) of the Austrian Embassy on Ventúrska 10. Tel: 5441 8507.

Austrian Culture Centre seminar and exhibition

Irmgard Jurkovich from Kittsee will give a lecture on the history of the Jewish community in Kittsee entitled "Irretrievably Lost" at 18:00 on Thursday, at Mozartova sieň (Mozart Hall) in the Austrian Embassy on Ventúrska 10. Tel: 5441 8507.

"Fellner and Helmer, Illusionist Architects" is an exhibition of the works of Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, who designed theatres around the world. Held at the Slovenské národné divadlo (Slovak National Theatre) Hviezdoslavovo námestie 1, which the architects built between 1885 and 1886, is only on display during theatre performance times, and runs till the end of April. "Culture in Auland", archaeological exhibition of the 2000-year history of the region near Vienna, runs at the Austrian Culture Centre on Zelená 7 till the end of April. Tel: 5441 4860.

Goethe Institute exhibitions

A photo exhibition "Authentic Performance" featuring photographs of the German Elfie Fröhlich runs at the Goethe Institute on Panenská 33 till May 10. Tel: 5443 3130.
