Californian philosopher in Bratislava

Slovak pianist Elena Letňanová will open a presentation given by philosopher Hal Sarf of California, who will introduce his recently published book At the Edge of the Abyss, at 20:00 on Saturday, July 14 at Veternicová 12. British Chamber of Commerce debate

Kenneth McPartland, the development director of Provident Financial in Slovakia, and Jozef Bača, the general director of Poštová banka's department of banking and international finances, will debate the Consumer Credit Act and its Implications on Consumer Lending in the Slovak Republic and Great Britain. The debate (in English) starts at 18:00 on Tuesday, July 17 in the British Council's conference room (on the 2nd floor), at Panská 17. Three-day Folklore festival under Poľana

The 36th Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou (Folk Celebration under Meadow Hill) will be held in the central Slovak town of Detva, some 20 kilometres east of Zvolen. Folklore assemblies from various regions will perform folk songs, dances and music played on traditional instruments. The festival begins at 20:00 on Friday, July 13; at 16:00 on July 14; and at 10:30 on July 15. For more information visit: www.detva.sk.

Slovak movies with English subtitles

Bratislava's Charlie Centrum cinema is screening films by Slovak director Dušan Hanák during July, with English subtitles. The 1972 film Picture of the Ancient World will be shown until July 10, Pink Dreams from July 11 to July 15, I Love, You Love from July 16 to July 20, Silent Pleasure from July 21 to July 25, and Paper Heads - the 1995 film about life under Communism - from July 26 to 31. Haydn Quartet in Piešťany

The Austrian Haydn Quartett (from Eisenstadt) will perform works by Austrian composers such as Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert. The concert begins at 19:30 on Saturday, July 14 at the Congress Hall on Kúpeľný ostrov (Spa Island) in Piešťany. Tel: 0838-775 2150.
Japanese and Slovak choir performance
A performance by the Japanese female choir Kusanomi, led by Akemi Nakamura, will be followed by the Bratislava All Men's Choir, led by Magdaléna Rovňáková, at 18:00 on Thursday, July 12 at Zrkadlová sieň (Mirror Hall) in Primaciálny palác on Primaciálne námestie 1 in the Bratislava Old Town. Statue exhibition in the Old Town

The street exhibition Statue and Object, which opened six years ago with the unveiling of Čumil, the man peeking out of a man-hole on the Bratislava Old Town corner of Panská and Rybárska brána, features works of international sculptors from Slovakia, the US, Poland, Hungary, England, Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Spain and Croatia on the Old Town streets, at Grassalkovich garden (behind the Presidential Palace), the Pálffy Palace courtyard, at the Zichy Palace and at the Polish Institute on SNP Square 27. The exhibition lasts till September 2.

Sunday concert in the Presidential Garden

Every second Sunday (including July 15th), concerts will be given in Grassalkovich garden behind the President's Palace in Bratislava. Performing bands include the Trenčín Town Chamber Orchestra, the Železiarne Podbrezová Brass Music band, C & K Brass Chamber Orchestra of Bratislava and the Children's Brass Music Hradišťanka band.

Austrian Culture Forum exhibition

Austrian Architecture Today is an exhibition featuring leading contemporary architectural works in Slovakia's neighbouring country to the west. The exhibition is being held at the K.F.A. Gallery on Karpatská 11 and runs till July 12. Tel: 5720 1313. Open Mon-Fri 8:00-16:30.

Goethe Institute photo exhibition

An exhibition of the works of German photographer Thomas Florschuetz entitled Fragments of Me, by Myself runs at the Goethe Institute in Bratislava on Panenská 33 till July 20. Tel: 5443 3130-2.

French Institute exhibition

Une histoire de la bande dessinée en France (The History of Comics in France) presents various forms of comic strips and the changes they have undergone in French history. The exhibition first introduces visitors to the father of French comics Rodolph Topffer, then showcases works by contemporary artists. At the French Institute's Gallery on Sedlárska 7 and runs till July 12. Tel: 5934 7777.
