Evangelical Ball
On the occasion of the 395th anniversary of its founding and 10th anniversary of its reopening, the Evangelical lyceum in Bratislava will hold its fourth annual Ball at 19:00 on February 2 in Bratislava Hotel on Seberíniho. Bishop Julius Filo will give a speech and famous cultural personalities will present a culture programme. Polish Institute Open Discussion
The Polish Institute in Bratislava in cooperation with the Slovak Institute for Public Affairs will organise an open discussion on the independence of newspapers with the chief editors of two major Polish dailies, Zycie (right) and Trybuna (ultra left), to be moderated by an editor from the Slovak daily paper Sme. The Last Hour
The Children of Slovakia Foundation (CSF) is asking all working individuals to donate the last hour of their wages from the year 2000 to benefit Slovak children. Donations can be made to the following bank account: 2000 2000 60/8080. Or call 018 222 to donate an automatic 55 Slovak crowns.
Additionally, companies may encourage their employees to participate the CSF's payroll deduction donation. Austrian Embassy Concert and Exhibitions
Austrian Gernot Winischhofer on violin and Slovak Regina Majtánová on piano will perform classical works in "Sunday Matinee". The concert will begin at 10:00 on February 4 at Galéria Mesta Bratislavy in Mirbachov Palác on Františkánske námestie 11.
The 'Thought Line' exhibition featuring jewellery made by young Slovak and Austrian artists will open at 18:00 on January 29 at the Austrian Culture Center on Zelená 7 and run till the end of February.
The official opening of a photo exhibition entitled "Vergessener Volker Mudigkeiten" (Tiredness of Forgot Nations) will take place on February 1 at 17:00 in Mozart Hall of the Austrian Embassy on Ventúrska 10. Featuring photographs of Jewish cemeteries taken by Austrian artists Christoph Lingg and Susanne Schaber, the exhibition's permanent address will be, however, in Múzeum židovskej kultúry (Museum of Jewish Culture) on Židovská 17. The Austrian Culture Centre together with Docomomo Slovakia (Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement) is holding an exhibition of Christian Ludwig Attersee. Born in Slovakia, Attersee is considered to be one of the founders of the "New Paintings" style in central Europe. The exhibition will take place in Slovenská národná galéria (Slovak National Gallery) on Riečna 1 and will end on February 28, 2001. Tel: 5443 2985.
French Institute exhibition
An exhibition of the artist Ester Šimerová-Martinčeková entitled Cameos on Saint-John Persea's Poems, organised by the French Institute, feature cut semiprecious stones with carved relieves on a background visualising Persea's poems. Šimerová-Martinčeková, a sculptor and painter influenced by cubism and surrealism, was born in Bratislava in 1909. The exhibition runs in the Institute's Gallery on Sedlárska 7, till February 12, 2001. Tel: 5934 7777.
Goethe Institute Exhibitions
The German Culture Institute is holding an exhibition of the most significant German graphic artist Albrecht Durer presenting around 150 of his graphic arts. The exhibition featuring Durer's famous xylographs and copperplates also exhibits works of his contemporaries. The exhibition takes place at Mirbachov Palace on Františkánske námestie 11 and runs till March 18. Tel: 5443 1556.
Also, the Goethe Institute is hosting a photo exhibition by Slovak Jana Vasiliaková entitled 'Photography', displaying photographs taken during her wanderings in nature. The exhibition is situated at the Goethe's Institute on Panenská 33 till the end of February. Tel: 5443 3130.
