British Council supports summer arts
The British Council in Bratislava ended this season by organising and participating in a series of interesting cultural events. The council is also co-operating with other foreign cultural institutions based in Slovakia to bring more British culture to the country.
New BC director Jim McGrath was on hand June 25 to accept the highest Slovak prize awarded to a filmmaker, the Golden Key, at the 1999 Art Film International Festival in Trenčinska Teplice. McGrath accepted in the name of his compatriot John Maybury, the director of the British-made film "Love is the Devil". The film is a study of Francis Bacon, the great 20th century artist who falls in love with George Dyer and subsequently takes a fatal overdose of drugs and alcohol. The movie largely succeeded among its Slovak audience in describing this ill-fated relationship. The BC also co-organised an Irish film day at the festival, which presented the island's young generation of film makers.
Currently, the BC is co-organising the exhibition of British artist Julie Livsey, who is exhibiting photographs in the courtyard of the Reading Room "Červený Rak" of flowers floating and hanging in the Danube River The exhibition, located off Michalská Street, is a part of the Summer Culture Festival in Bratislava and its international exhibition "Sculpture and Object '99".
