The Fulbright Foundation hosted state and education officials September 22 on the occasion of its 5th anniversary of work in Slovakia. The reception, held at the Forum Hotel, hosted Slovak Fulbright alumni, representatives of the Slovak National Council, the Slovak Government, and members of the academic community.At the ceremony, Slovak Minister of Education Ľubomír Ftáčnik, expressed his support for a proposal which will raise the level of contribution of the Slovak government to the Fulbright program to 10% from the current level of 1.2 million crowns. He is the first Slovak Minister of Education to attend the gala, after years of refusals from the former government, the Foundation said.

He is the first Slovak Minister of Education to attend the gala, after years of refusals from the former government, the Foundation said.

Slovakia has hosted American Fulbright scholars in country and sent more than 100 Slovak participants abroad since the early 1990's. The Fulbright Commission administers three basic types of educational programs - graduate level study, research and lecturing programs, and a high school teacher exchange program. More than 150 countries participate in the program.

America gives USIS a new name

The Bratislava branch of the United States Information Service, formerly known as USIS, has announced that it has a new name. Starting October 1, the agency will be called the Office of Public Affairs of the United States Embassy mark its incorporation into the US State Department. The change affects USIS divisions world-wide.

There will be no change in the level of information or related operations and personnel in Slovakia. The address, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses for the Public Affairs Office will be the same as for USIS, the new agency reported.
