Bratislava CONCERT:A CONCERT by the world famous Jan Garbarek Group will take place in the legendary PKO building in Bratislava on March 2. Garbarek, a world-renown tenor saxophonist, has attracted a huge following with his compositions as well as his improvisations. He has joined forces with numerous musicians and in Bratislava will play with Rainer Brueninghaus, Yuri Daniel and Trilok Gurtu. LIVE MUSIC: Art of Livin’ - Tetzepi. The phenomenal Dutch free-jazz orchestra will again, after its huge past success, return to Slovakia to a smaller venue this time.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: Hudba troch storočí. In the E-cycle of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, Bratislavans will hear Beethoven’s Coriolan, Concert for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 Major as well as Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 E-Minor.

OPERA/BALLET: 90th anniversary of the Slovak National Theatre. The SND will celebrate its anniversary with a series of classical pieces that will be performed over one week, featuring all Slovak and Czech compositions with the exception of Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. For some pieces there is a pass selling for €9, permitting attendance at all chosen performances.

Runs: March 2-7. On March 2 Mrštíks’ Mariša will be performed, Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and an original Slovak opera by E. Suchoň Krútňava (The Whirlpool) at 19:00. EXHIBITION: Dizajn písma NL/SK – The Slovak Centre of Design has prepared an international exhibition devoted to the modern trends in typography, design and the aesthetics of writing. A second part will introduce Slovak designers.

FILMS: Ciclos de Cine Hispano – Instituto Cervantes and the inlingua Nitra language school have prepared three cycles of Spanish films in original sound with English subtitles. Within the cycle Horor a Triler, Tesis by Alejandro Amenábar will be shown first.

EXHIBITION: Bloudění mezi sprnem ’68 a listopadem ’89 – The name of the exhibition, “Sauntering between August ’68 and November ’89”, reveals the contents of the photographic exhibition – communist Czechoslovakia between two important points in its history.
