Western SLOVAKIABratislava MUSIC: DEŇ BACHOVEJ hudby na Slovensku / The Day of Bach Music is marked in Slovakia on July 28, the day of the great composer’s death, and will be commemorated in several cities and towns by performances of his Allein Gott in der Hoeh’ sei Ehr’/ To God Alone on High Be Glory chorale, chosen as the common theme for this year. So far, the institutions taking part in this event are the Evangelical Churches in Martin, Nitra, Púchov, Turany and Vrbové, and the Roman Catholic St Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava and churches in Sečovce, Námestovo, Chynorany, Ludanice and Topoľčany. More may become involved by July 28. The Bach Day has been organised by the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession and the occasion is the Year of Christian Culture 2010.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: The Violin Orchestra offers its own arrangements of various genres, from folk music to operetta. A day later, the Slovak “Bocelli” – Marián Bango, a blind Roma singer with an amazing voice – sings for the public at the same site.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: The Viva Musica! festival nears its end with several attractive concerts, including on July 28 a concert by well-known Slovak rock and jazz musician Oskar Rózsa. Some of the festival’s other concerts, being held in squares and streets around the Old Town, are free.

EXHIBITION: GALÉRIA U sediaceho anjela / The Gallery At the Sitting Angel in Kežmarok presents a unique retrospective collection of works by Jozef Srna, a Slovak painter from the 1970s and 1980s who silently observed human existence and people living on the periphery of society. Srna is hard to label and his works display a wide variety of themes and styles. The exhibition can be seen on weekdays from 10:00 to 18:00 until August 26.
