jAZZ: THIS YEAR, the One Day Jazz Fest will bring a taste of the Orient: apart from the Martin Valihora Trio (Slovakia) and Gypsy Classic (Hungary) the March 22 event, which takes place in the Slovak Radio building at Mýtna 1, will also feature the Abhijit Banerjee Trio from India, thus comprising a unique cross-over concert of modern Slovak jazz and classical Indian music. The ODJF is jointly organised by M. Valihora and the Shiraz agency. Tickets for the concert, which begins at 19:00, cost €15 and can be bought through www.ticketportal.sk or at the venue.

FILM FESTIVAL + MUSIC: The 4th Indonesian Film Exhibition brings movies like Cin(T)a, Ruma Maida (Maida’s House) and Euphoria, all with English subtitles and simultaneous translation into Slovak. The opening ceremony will include a performance of Balinese traditional music.

LIVE DANCE: Dancing Puzzle – For the first time this year, different dance styles and studios meet under one roof. The J.M. Bella Conservatory from Banská Bystrica, the Andalucia ensemble, the Tangere Dance Studio, Laban’s Atelier from Bratislava and the host dance company, elledanse, are all represented. The event includes also an Impro-Jam with live improvisations.

INSECTS: Exotické potvorky / Exotic Small Beasts – This exhibition of tropical insects from the private collection of Michal Zachar from Prievidza showcases diurnal and nocturnal butterflies, attractive species of swallowtail, peacock butterflies, and hawk-moths, mostly from Africa, Asia and South America.

CONCERT: THE FAMOUS Cigánski Diabli (Gypsy Devils) band will play gypsy folk music as well as classical and modern pieces at the Town Sports Hall in Michalovce as part of a concert with rock veteran Robo Grigorov that takes place on March 26 from 19:30. Their recent tour has resulted in a fascinating combination of the artists’ different musical styles.

Humenné

LIVE MUSIC: Collegium Musicum: Speak, Memory Tour – The latest leg of a tour by this legendary Slovak rock band, who recently returned to performing. M. Varga, F. Frešo, F. Griglák are the original members, with only M. Valihora on drums as a new addition. Their music represents a stunning combination of rock, jazz and classical music.
