EXHIBITION:Vajnorský výtvarný salon / The Vajnory Artistic Salon presents works by Slovak visual artists Peter Cpin, Viera Čepcová, Peter Ďurík, Anna Holaňová, Igor Kaplán, Martin Kellenberger, Tamara Žišková, Květa Fulierová and Spanish guest Maria Jesús Rivero. Artworks of different genres can be seen daily between 14:00 and 18:00 in the Typo&Ars Gallery, Roľnícka 349 (in the Bratislava borough of Vajnory), until August 17. MUSIC FESTIVAL: Viva Musica! – This music festival, combining classical, jazz and world music, enters its 8th year and will take place in several venues, including the streets of the capital. Gigs include Igudesman & Joo’s A Little Nightmare Music, an opera gala by Sonya Yoncehva and Stefan Pop, the Michael Nyman Band, the Nigel Kennedy Quintet, Vladimír Godár and Iva Bittová, and others. The festival will open on June 23 on the Main Square with a tribute – admission free – to the late comedian and musician Jaro Filip.

THEATRE FESTIVAL: Istropolitana Projekt – This biennial festival is unique in central Europe in giving drama students an opportunity to share experience and challenge each other. Organised by the Academy of Performing Arts, the event is also a competition among colleges and an overview of their work, embracing drama schools from France, Moldova, Switzerland, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Poland, among others.

DOG COMPETITION: Pes sympaťák / Most Likeable Dog – The competition to find the most likeable dog(s) is open to purebred as well as cross-bred dogs, and includes a military dog course, demonstrations of police dog training, lectures on dog psychology, a show of guide-dogs for the blind, and more.

GALLERY/MOVIE: The Slovak National Gallery (SNG) has launched a new tradition of screening movies in its amphitheatre on Tuesdays and Saturdays. In June this will include This Must Be the Place (2011), a comedy/drama by director Paolo Sorrentino, starring Sean Penn, Frances McDormand and Judd Hirsch.

ENVIRO-FEST: Ekofest vol 5 – The 5th year of the multi-genre benefit festival Ekofest spreads over two days for the first time, and includes eight concerts, various screenings, exhibitions, lectures and presentations. The proceeds will go towards improvements at the Trnava Botanical Garden.

OPERA:
The 39th year of the Zvolen Castle Plays premieres Umberto Giordano’s opera Fedora on June 24 at 20:00 at Zvolen Castle. The tragic love of a countess and a nihilist at the turn of the 20th century is typical of the Italian operatic verismo (realism) style. Tickets cost €10 and €15 and can be bought through www.stateopera.sk.
