FESTIVAL: THE RE-ENACTMENT of historical coronations that took place in Bratislava between 1563 and 1830 when nineteen kings and queens of the Great Hungarian Kingdom were crowned at St Martin’s Cathedral, has become a popular June event called Coronation Festival. This year, an entire weekend will be dedicated to the coronation of King Leopold I (on June 27, 1655), from June 21 to 23, including a period crafts market, a parade of free imperial towns and the festival of Lemberger red wine (Frankovka). The main programme starts on June 23 at 14:00 with the coronation march from the castle to the Main Square.

OPERA: Mariusz Kwiecien – The renowned Polish baritone has sung in some of the world’s biggest opera houses, and in Bratislava he will perform, in addition to his famous roles, a duet with Slovak soprano Simona Houda Šaturová.

EXTREME CYCLING: Bratislava City Downhill – This extreme cycling race brings the world’s best racers to the city centre, to a route that is only one kilometre long but very demanding. It is labelled “the pilot project of City Downhill World Cup in 2014”.

BIRD WATCHING: Families, ornithologists, nature lovers and also the handicapped can watch the European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster) under Sandberg hill. One of the sites where colonies of these birds can be seen is Devínska Kobyla, where there will be an observation point which will offer lectures and loan-out binoculars.

OPERA: ZVOLEN Castle Plays (ZHZ): The oldest open-air theatre festival in Slovakia focuses in its 40th year on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, offering a premiere (by the State Opera in Banská Bystrica) of his Macbeth, his operas La Traviata, Rigoletto and Nabucco, concert versions of Il Corsaro and his Requiem and a selection of his compositions. PERFORMANCE: CreW: Arthuur – This dance-music-visual performance held in a public space combines improvisations in three dimensions by Czech and Dutch dancers, graphic designers and musicians, revolving around Arthuur, a machine attached to the dancer’s body which records on paper the movements of the person wearing it.

GARDEN ART: Návrat vody do mesta / Return Water to the City – Slovak visual artist Ilona Németh’s artistic installation, which is part of the European Capital of Culture 2013 Košice, creates French and English-style floating gardens at the Millrace (continuing throughout the summer). On June 22, the project culminates with a 24-hour performance focused on the return of water to the Hornád River.
