Environmental Spring has arrived
THE MINISTRY of Environment and the Slovak Environmental Agency (SAŽP) decided to kick off the Environmental Spring campaign on Earth Day, the last day of April. The event's highlight will be the 12th annual Envirofilm international film festival, which will run between May 2 and 6 in Banská Bystrica, Banská Štiavnica and Zvolen and feature 109 films from 23 countries.
The aim of the event is to inform the public about environmental concerns and warn about the need to protect nature. SAŽP general director Miroslav Tončík told the SITA news wire that Armenia and Estonia joined the festival this year for the first time.
Thirty-four movies have been selected for the competitive section. John Doyle from Great Britain holds the record for the highest number of films enrolled with six.
Well-known Slovak documentary filmmaker Pavol Barabáš, who was designated the personality of the festival's 12th year, will compete with two films, Pururambo and Premeny Tatier (The Tatras' Metamorphosis).
Studhorse farm anniversary
THE NATIONAL studhorse farm in Topoľčianky celebrates its 85th anniversary on May 1. A rich programme is promised for the day, which will start at 9:00 with a demonstration of riding skills and a show of Lipizzan horses.
Guests from the Czech Republic will arrive to introduce their gene reserve - a breed from Kladno, the SITA news wire reported. A museum of horse breeding and riding will also be open during the festivities, where children will have the chance to ride in carriages or on horseback.
Warsaw presentation a Slovak success
SLOVAKIA won the Summer Hit 2006 prize at a tourist fair held in Warsaw, Poland between April 21 and 23. The prize was for the best exposition and presentation and was decided by the fair's attendees.
Ján Bošnovič, who heads the Slovak Tourist Board office in Poland, accepted the Summer Hit 2006 statue for his country.
