Tatra screens Barabáš' films
BRATISLAVA'S Tatra Cinema introduces traveller and documentary filmmaker Pavol Barabáš within its monthly Profile cycle. Between January 23 and 25 it will screen six of his films that have harvested numerous prizes at film festivals around the globe in original, Slovak versions.
Each evening will show two films, one shorter and one longer. January 23 at 20:30 brings Mysterious Mamberamo and The Tatras as Mystery. Next day, January 24, the screening starts at 18:30 when 118 Days in the Captivity of Ice and Buddhist Ladakh will be brought to the screen. January 25's block will offer Omo - A Journey to the Primaeval Age, and Slovakia at 18:30 and 20:30, respectively.
The selection characterizes Barabáš' focus; the existence of people in extreme conditions (118 Days in the Captivity of Ice), life in mountains (Buddhist Ladakh), adventures in nature untouched by civilisation (Mysterious Mamberano, Omo) and the filmmaker's admiration of his native landscape (The Tatras as Mystery, Slovakia).
Masterpieces for art lovers on sale
DARTE auction house in Prešov will hold a sale of artworks and antiques at Hotel Slovan in Košice on January 29 at 15:00. The masterpieces offered for auction are on display at Dajana Gallery, Hlavná 34 in Prešov, from January 23 to 28. It is open between Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 until 17:00.
The auction house primarily focuses on works by Andy Warhol. This time it offers two screen prints of Saint Apollonia, each at the auction price at Sk350,000 (€9,300), and screen print Grapes at Sk395,000 (€10,500).
Other masterpieces on sale include a lithograph by Pablo Picasso, paintings by Czech Jan Zrzavý and Slovaks Milan Laluha, Vincent Hložník and Ernest Zmeták.
Photographers show personal diaries
A DUO of Hungarian curators initiated an international project called I Imagine that maps the "personal diary" genre in contemporary photography. It takes place at the Central-European House of Photography in Bratislava (Prepoštská 4) until the end of January.
Curators Judit Csatlós and Gergely László selected 10 young photographers from the Central European region to display their views of themselves and the world around that testify to the "heterogeneity in picturing Central-European identity".
Slovakia raises its music profile
Pianist Miki Škuta will represent Slovakia at the 40th annual international music fair MIDEM 2006, taking place from January 22 to 26 in Cannes, France. This is the first time in the history of the Slovak Republic that a Slovak musician is to perform at the event.
Škuta will take to the stage on January 25 with Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations.
The fair is a central meeting point for music professionals. Over 9,000 people from 92 countries will meet this year to familiarize themselves with new trends and possibilities in the music business, while taking part in a number of live concerts.
Slovakia will publicize its music scene through materials on a stand at the fair.
Jean-Luc Bideau introduces his films
THE FAMOUS Swiss actor Jean-Luc Bideau comes to Bratislava on January 24. On that day, the Swiss Embassy, in cooperation with the French Institute in Bratislava, will present Hommage a Jean-Luc Bideau, an event screening the actor's films at the capital's Mladosť cinema that will last until January 27.
The six movies in the selection will be shown in original versions, mostly with Slovak, German and Italian subtitles. The 1982 film Tout feu tout flamme (on January 25 at 18:00) will also be accompanied by an English translation. The actor, who has worked for the most talented directors in Swiss, French and international cinema, such as Alain Tanner, Claude Goretta, Jean-Luc Godard and Bertrand Tavernier, to name but a few, will personally introduce all the films.
