Fine arts student wins glass contest

AŠOT HAAS, a student at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU) in Bratislava, won the Nova Gallery Award for glass art works for Object in Object I and II. Along with the prize, Haas received €2,500.
A total of 80 artists from the Czech Republic and Slovakia competed.
The winner was born in Moscow on July 16, 1981. In 1989 he and his family moved to Bratislava. He is currently a student in the Department of Sculpture, Object and Installation studying under academic sculptor Juraj Meliš.
Visitors can see the works of 17 finalists at the Gallery Z on Ventúrska Street. The exhibition is open until April 8.
Slovak documentary honoured in Prague
YOUNG Slovak director Daniela Rusnoková won a special award in the category of short documentaries for her film Soňa a jej rodina (Soňa and Her Family) at the ninth annual meeting of the prestigious festival of human rights, One World, in Prague on March 7, the TASR news wire wrote.
"The jury has awarded this exceptional project in the field of short documentaries. The film intimately and authentically shows a true and comprehensive picture of the life of Roma through the life of Soňa and her family," the festival's spokesman, Filip Šebek, told TASR.
In her movie, Rusnoková focused on the life of Soňa, a strong, loving woman and the mother of 15 children in the Rudňany Roma settlement, following her life from 2004 to 2006. The film documents Soňa's everyday concerns about getting by and her struggle with disadvantaged external conditions, which is getting harder and harder. The film is an interesting portrait of a woman with a difficult destiny. It shows how it is possible to identify with a person who is far removed from us, while also describing the current situation of the Roma in Slovakia.
