Magazine awards cultural preservation
PAMIATKY a Múzeá, a magazine on historical monuments and museums, has given out its annual awards for the most significant activities in the salvaging, restoration, promotion and presentation of Slovakia's cultural heritage. The ceremony took place in Žilina on September 7.
A total of 81 subjects enrolled in seven categories, Jana Chrappová from the Slovak National Museum informed The Slovak Spectator.
In the category of restoration, Jozef Dorica with his collective and the Central-Slovak Museum in Banská Bystrica received the annual award for restoration of the Green Hall in the Thurzo House from the 15th century, where the museum is located. "Restorers completely renewed wall paintings in the hall," Martin Krupa from the Banská Bystrica Region told SITA on September 8. The restoration took from December 2005 to February 2007 and was financed by the Banská Bystrica Region, the Culture Ministry and the SPP Foundation.
Ladislav Székely and the regional restoration atelier of the Monuments Office in Levoča received the prize for restoration of wall paintings, stucco and stone decoration in the church of the Červený Kláštor monastery.
Pavel Dvořák, Anna Durišová, RAK publishing house and the Slovak National Museum were awarded for the documentary film The Lost World of Slovak Mammoths.
In the category of Discovery, Finding and Acquisition, two awards were given out. Peter Roth, Karol Pieta and the Podtatranské Museum in Poprad were awarded for the discovery of a tomb of a 5th-century Germanic leader in Poprad-Matejovce. The Museum of Puppet Cultures and Toys at the Modrý Kameň Castle received an award for the acquisition of the wandering puppet theatre of the Dubský family.
Warhol's brother visits Medzilaborce
John Warhola praised the museum's dedication to displaying his brother's art.

JOHN Warhola, the brother of the king of pop-art Andy Warhol, visited the town of Medzilaborce in eastern Slovakia during the second weekend in September. The town is home to the Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art.
"I'm very pleased with what I see here," Warhola said after visiting the museum. Apart from a gallery in Pittsburgh, this is the only museum that focuses exclusively on the pop art king, the ČTK newswire wrote. "Since my last visit six years ago the museum has improved a lot," he said.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York, of which John Warhola is vice-president, is one of the subjects supporting the museum in Medzilaborce. It sends it between $15,000-$25,000 annually, which the museum can use only to finance art projects for young people.
"He would certainly have liked this museum and agreed with what it does," said Warhola.
The museum in Medzilaborce exhibits about 160 works by Andy Warhol. The museum in Pittsburgh, where Andy Warhol was born, offers around 12,000 works.
Andy Warhol's parents were both from Miková, which is now part of Medzilaborce, but emigrated to the USA before the artist (1928-87) was born.
