Return of the Storks to compete for Oscar
THE SLOVAK Film and TV Academy nominated on September 21 the new Slovak movie Návrat bocianov (Return of the Storks) to compete for Best Foreign Language film at the Academy Awards. The second candidate for the nomination was Rozhovor s nepriateľom (Meeting the Enemy) directed by Patrik Lančarič.
The academy committee emphasised that both films have expanded Slovak filmmaking's range of topics, introduced new directors, and tapped fresh production potential.
Return of the Storks, directed by Martin Repka, tells the story of Vanda, a young German flight attendant who runs off to an old village on the Slovak-Ukrainian border, where her grandmother lives. The journey makes Vanda reflect on her roots and allows her to go back to her city life knowing she will always have a home.
The film was a personal exploration for Repka, whose has a Slovak father and a German mother.
Meeting the Enemy, based on the novel by Leopold Lahola, is set during one day at the end of the Second World War. In a raw countryside covered with snow, a German soldier is escorting his captive for death and ends up searching for a principle of humanity.
The 80th Academy Awards ceremony takes place on February 24.

Netherlands Dance Theatre to grace SND
THE SLOVAK National Theatre Ballet will host on October 2 the junior part of the prominent Netherlands Dance Theatre, which is inseparably connected with world-renowned Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián. The troupe arrives at the invitation of the SND Ballet director Mário Radačovský, a former member of the NDT.
The troupe NDT II, whose members are athletic and talented dancers from around the world aged between 17 and 22, arrive in Bratislava with three pieces choreographed by Jiří Kylián: Sleepless, 27'52'', and Chapeau.
