Find Slovak humour in Berlin
EIGHTEEN Slovak cartoonists exhibit the best of their works at the Slovak Institute Gallery in Berlin until April 15. Among the artists on show are Pavel Taussig, Walter Ihring, Fero Jablonovský, Oliver Solga and Dana Zacharová.

THE CHECK Slovakia! exhibition of young contemporary Slovak artists opened March 8 at the Koloman Sokol Gallery in Washington DC.
It presents works by nine young Slovak artists working in various art media, from photography and graphic art to installation and video-projection.
Trnava's Ján Koniarek Gallery director, Viera Jančeková, prepared the project in 2004 for the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, in cooperation with the institution's director, Alexander Tolnay.
Dusíková receives Beato Angelico
SLOVAK fine artist Mája Dusíková, who lives and works in Florence, Italy, was awarded the international Beato Angelico award for her lifelong work as an illustrator of children's books. Dusíková and artists from six other countries collected the awards at Castello Collona castle in Genazzano, the TASR news agency reported.
Košice premieres Carmen
THE RENOWNED Romantic opera Carmen by George Bizet has been added to the repertoire of the Košice state theatre, the SITA newswire reported.
The main male role, Don José, is shared by tenors Giovanni Ribichesu, from Italy and Slovaks Michal Lehotský and Jaroslav Dvorský. Prague state opera soloist Andrea Kalivodová alternates the role of Carmen with Gabriela Hübnerová and Viera Kállayová.
This is the sixth time the opera is returning to the Košice theatre. Directed by Blažena Hončarivová and conducted by Igor Dohovič the current production is based on traditional principles. The theatre will also present this Carmen at the international opera festival in Sopron, in western Hungary, on July 1 and 2.
Paris auctions Beňovský's memoirs
PARIS auctioneers Drouot Richelieu will auction Voyages et Mémoires (Journeys and Memoirs) by Slovak nobleman Móric August Beňovský, in its March 17 auction, the Czech daily Mladá fronta Dnes reported.
Adventurer Beňovský travelled the world, once even assuming the role of King of Madagascar. The book was published in Paris in 1791.
Academy announces Slovak "Grammys"
THE AUREL awards, the Slovak version of the Grammys, were announced by the Slovak Popular Music Academy March 4.
Rhythmical drumming outfit, Mango Molas, was the discovery of the year. Janko Lehotský received an award for his lifelong contribution to music. Zuzana Mojžišová's album only won two out of its four nominations, for the best sound and best producer, Oscar Rózsa.
The moderator for the evening, Miro Žbirka, won best male vocalist. Zuzana Smatanová won best female.
Band of the year Desmond also picked up the award for best song, Pár dní. Marián Čekovský was named best instrumentalist.
The jury gave IMT Smile the best album award for Exotica and Ondrej Rudavský got best music video for Jana Kirschner's song Na čiernom koni. The Puding Pani Elvisovej's CD Automati received the Aurel for best cover.
