Amazonia Vertical showing in cinemas
AMAZONIA Vertical, the latest film from renowned Slovak documentary director Pavol Barabáš, will premiere at Bratislava's Tatra cinema on April 7 at 18:00. The director himself will be present at the screening and hold a discussion afterwards.
The film won the Mountain Nature category at the 8th Moscow International Festival of Mountaineering and Adventure Films.
Amazonia Verticalwas filmed in 2004 in extreme natural conditions and captures the nerve-jangling adventures of four Slovak climbers on the flat-topped Venezuelan mountain of Auyan Tepui. Climber Peter "Becko" Ondrejovič, who, with his fellow-adventurers, were the first people to ascend Ayuan Tepui, narrates the documentary.
A DVD of Amazonia Vertical, scheduled for release in mid-April, will make the film available to an English-speaking audience.
A DVD collection of Barabáš' previous films will also be on sale at the Amazonia Verticalfilm premieres in Bratislava's Tatra cinema on April 7 at 18:00 and April 8 to 10 at 19:00; Trnava's SONYcineMax on April 7 to 13 at 18:00; and Ružomberok's Kultúra on April 9 and 10 at 18:00.
Lenin statue not for sale
THE STATUE of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, which dominated Nitra's Svätoplukovo (then Lenin's) square during the former regime, will not be sold to a private company, the SITA news agency reported.
The town's officials have decided to establish a place for storing historical artefacts owned by the town. Tibor Bártfay created the statue and its book value is Sk1.6 million (€40,000).
Father and son exhibit in Poland
THE SLOVAK Institute in Warsaw has recently opened an exhibition of cartoons by Ivan Popovič and photographs by Dávid Popovič under the title, Father and Son, the SITA news agency reported.
The institute will also introduce their animated films and short stories. The exhibition is part of the Warsaw Festival of Artistic Photography. In May it will move to Krakow's Union of Slovaks in Poland gallery.
The Prodigy star at Pohoda
BRITISH progressive band The Prodigy will headline Slovakia's largest music festival Pohoda, which runs July 15 and 16 on the grounds of Trenčín airport, the daily SME reported.
Among other performers, the organizers promise British Asian Dub Foundations, rapper Roots Manuva and Cuban singer Omara Portuondo. Tickets to the festival will be on sale from the middle of April.
