Four receive Golden Note
The winners of the Golden Note award for 2004 have been announced. Every year, the Slovak Philharmonic, the Košice State Philharmonic and the Žilina State Chamber Orchestra select the best young instrumentalists in Slovakia. The aim of the award is to inspire and retain talented young musicians in particular orchestras.
Four musicians won the prize for 2004: Katarína Adamová from the Slovak Philharmonic Choir, trumpeter Rastislav Suchan from the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, harp player Ivana Boggerová from the Košice State Philharmonic and bassoonist Ján Mazán from the Žilina State Chamber Orchestra.
Tiso attracts foreign media
TISO, the drama that is currently playing at Bratislava's Aréna theatre, has caught the interest of the foreign media, the SITA news agency reported.
Malaysian newspaper The Star wrote that the portrait of Roman-Catholic priest, Jozef Tiso, who became president of the wartime Slovak Republic and sent over 70,000 Jews to concentration camps, probably would make it to the front pages of Slovak media.
The newspaper quoted the play's director, Rastislav Ballek, who said that it was time to be open on this topic.
The Chairman of the Slovak Association for Foreign Society, Juraj Stern, and director of Bratislava's Jewish Museum, Pavol Mešťan, admired the boldness with which the performers revived the discussion on this controversial statesman.
On the other hand, they criticized the inadequate explanation of his role during the Holocaust. They suggested a discussion should follow the performance.
