Frankl's paintings tour film festivals

VISIONS from the Inferno, a documentary narrating the horrors of the Holocaust through the paintings of Jewish artist Adolf Frankl, received awards at the international film festivals in Telč and Trenčianske Teplice.
The Arts & Film festival in Telč awarded the film third prize for its artistic interpretation. At the Art Film in Trenčianske Teplice, the film received two Special Mentions awarded by the Fédération International des Ciné-Clubs jury and the festival's president for the film's fundamental research of the destiny of the Slovak painter, bringing a new look to the not-so-distant reality of WWII.
The Film Olomouc Academy 2005 nominated the film for their festival, which runs between October 2 and 6.
Visions from the Inferno is a co-production by Slovak Television and Aaron-Egele Film, directed by Peter Dimitrov. It premiered in Bratislava last March.
Turcel exhibits in Washington

SLOVAK artist Roman Turcel brought his latest exhibit to the US. Turcel's visionary presentation entitled Uniting Hands is a collection of 23 oil paintings on canvas displayed at the Slovak embassy in Washington, DC, through September.
The exhibit plays upon the theme of global unity. The pieces are dedicated to global leaders, celebrities, and world-renowned, modern-day visionaries, who Turcel invites to use their clout to popularize the notion of global unity.
"Each painting in this exhibit is like an envelope; it is up to the people depicted in each to fill it with a message," says Turcel, who invites his subjects to sign those messages onto his canvases. They include the Dalai Lama, Queen Elizabeth, Lance Armstrong, and Donald Trump.
Sensitive to the injustice and discord the world is rife with, Turcel hopes that this exhibit will encourage people from all cultures and backgrounds to share their beliefs, learn from each other, and shake hands.

Slovak opera singer scores in Vienna
SOLOIST of the Slovak National Theatre (SND) Opera, Adriana Kučerová, won the 24th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna. Along with the absolute winner's title, she also received the audience prize in the opera category, the SITA news agency reported.
Up to 3,000 young singers participated in the competition this year, 142 of whom qualified for the final rounds in Vienna. Kučerová, a recent graduate of Bratislava's Academy of Performing and Drama Arts, performed with other awarded singers on July 8 at the gala-concert in Vienna's Badene theatre. After the theatre holidays in Slovakia end, she can be seen in two new productions of the SND Opera: The Merry Widow, an operetta by Franz Lehár, and The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
