Dvorský new boss of Košice opera
THE RENOWNED opera soloist Peter Dvorský will lead the State Theatre Košice Opera from January. He will become the opera's artistic director for at least two years.
"I think that we should push ahead further than Košice," current opera boss Karol Kevický told the daily Pravda. "I wouldn't be able to handle this task. Košice needs a significant personality in order to impact on a larger scale."
Kevický gave up the post in favour of Dvorský. He stays in the opera as a conductor.
According to the daily, Dvorský plans to obtain more finances for the theatre. "I want to utilize the theatre's experiences and contacts that it has gained so far. It is necessary to enlarge the ensemble with soloists so it could undertake more ambitious plans. I want to create a repertoire that will be popular, as well as invite well-known foreign artists more often," said tenor Dvorský, who will also take part in several Košice performances.
Stano's whiteware photos go on show
SLOVAK photographer living in Prague, Tono Stano, exhibits his photographs on whiteware for the first time in Bratislava. Bowls, plates and trays decorated with Stano's famed photographs of women are on show at the SPP Gallery at Drevená 4 until November 27.
Entitled In Whiteware, the items are not only decorative but also for use. Stano says the idea comes from his childhood when as a small kid interested in photography he admired the porcelain motifs on village graves.
Slovaks illustrate Andersen's fairytales
PARIS publishing house Gründ prints three books of fairytales illustrated by Kamila Štanclová and Dušan Kállay in honour of the 200th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth. On the occasion of the publication of the first two books, the Slovak embassy in Paris is running an exhibition showing the artists' original works until November 25. The third book of Andersen's fairytales will be published in February 2006.
