Dance theatre turns 15

MODERN dance is not a mainstream genre and, while laudable to try, it is not easy to establish and run a modern dance theatre successfully. “In the course of the year, we want to bring projects working with the issue of corporeality and dance in new original dance performances, but also in various other artistic intersections,” Divadlo Štúdio Tanca stated in a press release.

Apart from a first piece, 7_choreografov, that premieres on April 5, a premiere of a dance piece by Jozef Fruček is planned for October 14, and yet another premiere, of a dance performance by Tibor Trulík, is planned for December 13, and the 10th year of the Dni tanca pre vás / Days of Dance for You festival is scheduled for October.

Other events include dance movies, an exhibition of stage artefacts inspired by dance stagings, workshops, an auction of artefacts, art and photography exhibitions, the continued 2v1 / 2in1 project – combining live concerts with dance performances – and cooperation with departments of art at various academies.

The theatre has so far premiered 30 original dance pieces, three performances for children and numerous experimental dance projects; it has also travelled across Slovakia and abroad, including to international festivals. It runs the Štyri (+1) dni tanca pre vás / Four (+1) Days of Dance for You event and since 2011 it has had its own premises.

The event opening the jubilee year, 7_choreografov, combines seven authors, seven combinations, seven duets, seven motifs and seven energies to create a harmonised whole – or maybe stress the diversity between them. The piece elaborates the motif of duets through the perception of seven choreographers, renowned authors of modern dance in Slovakia who have at one time or another affected the form and life of the theatre: Milan Kozánek, Zuna Kozánková, Katarína Zagorski, Stanislava Vlčeková, Daniel Raček, Peter Mika and Zuzana Hájková. The performance, marking the 15th anniversary of the theatre, is unified by the music of Matej Haasz and will be staged in the Divadlo Štúdio Tanca, at Komenského 12 in Banská Bystrica, on April 5, 6 and 10.
