Slovakia will celebrate Easter in March starting with Good Friday on March 21 and culminating with Easter Monday.
Towns accross the country will hold Easter markets where people will be able to find traditional Slovak Easter accoutrements – eggs decorated by various techniques as well as whips and Easter delicacies.
The Easter tradition in Slovakia involves groups of men going door-to-door to “whip” their female relatives and neighbours with a stick of braided willow branches called a korbáč, and to splash them with water or perfume. The soaking and whipping are said to ensure the women’s beauty, health, and fertility for the coming year, although the ritual is often only grimly tolerated.
