BRATISLAVA

THE BEER tradition in Slovakia has made it into the arts. Cartoonists from around the globe annually join the international The Golden Keg competition. The humorous results are exhibited at two venues - the Šariš Gallery in Prešov and the Miro Gallery in Bratislava. The Šariš Gallery at Hlavná 51, displays the best of 600 works submitted by 197 artists from 27 countries this year. Fedor Vico, the founder of the competition and one of the jurors says that the jury evaluates "the visual value and originality of the idea, which is especially important in the case of this competition as its theme does not change". He also made it clear that even though artists from different parts of the world arrive with similar ideas, there are some surprisingly original entries this year. The Šariš Gallery Prešov is open on working days except Monday between 9:00 and 16:30 (until 17:30 on Thursday) and between 14:00 and 18:00 on Sunday (closed on Saturday). The exhibition runs until May 16. For more information call 051/7581-121. The Bratislava Miro Gallery at Košická 56 hosts a selection of the best works from the previous year. Visitors can see them from Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 17:00 and on Saturday between 9:00 and 13:00 until April 30. An addition to the Bratislava section is a screening of the documentary Golden Keg by Laco Csiky. For more information call 02/5070-2866.
