WELCOME to Partyslava! By this slogan Bratislava invites foreigners as well as its citizens to spend the last night of the year in the city's downtown. The programme is rich, offering performances for all generations. Traditionally, the Main Square hosts the programme's highlights, featuring Slovak pop-stars, such as Peha, Ghymes and Hex. A Silvester disco takes place at Hviezdoslavo námestie. Jazz, retro and world genres are planned to sound on Námestie Ľ Štúra. The evening peaks with the countdown to midnight and a fireworks display, designed by Art2Architecture from London, will light up the Danube embankment. The 20-minute light-acoustic-pyrotechnic show accompanied by live drumming starts on Rázusovo - Vajanského nábrežie at 23:50. For more information call 02/5935-6155.

THE ORAVA Gallery in Dolný Kubín celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. To mark the event, Slovakia's third most visited gallery holds two exhibitions. The first, entitled Hommage a Karol Baron, honours the painter who used to live in Dolný Kubín and who always pointed out the important role that the town played in his artistic career. The second, Baroque Sculptures of Orava, presents local baroque masterpieces that bear traces of the region in which they were created: a bit mysterious and different from artworks from other regions. Both exhibitions are open between Tuesday and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 until January 8. Tickets cost Sk20.
