Western SLOVAKIA
IMNA BRAUER, a phenomenal singer of Jewish-Yemeni origin, and her husband, Israeli jazz pianist Elias Meiri, are performing at a double concert with the Pressburger Klezmer Band in Bratislava on September 15. Their show, which is entitled the Songs from Jerusalem, presents Jewish music in all its richness and variety of style, with Arabic, Balkan, Spanish and Indian influences. The Pressburger Klezmer Band will host Bratislava-based Armenian singer and composer Karine Sarkisjan. The double concert takes place in the Klub za Zrkadlom music club at Rovniankova 3 and starts at 19:00. The concert includes a sampling of Jewish delicacies. Central SLOVAKIA
BAGPIPERS from around Europe are gathering for the eighth year of Gajdovačka, which takes place between September 14 and 16. The event features more than sixty bagpipers from Poland, the Czech Republic, Croatia, England, the Netherlands and Slovakia, who will perform in the Slovak village of Oravská Polhora, the town of Dolný Kubín, and the Polish village of Wadowice. The programme on Friday includes a morning concert for schoolchildren in Oravská Polhora performed by Polish instrumentalist Jozef Broda and a competition of folk singers at 18:30. Saturday's programme begins at 11:00 with the opening of a exhibition of bagpipes by Vladimír Kovářík from Prague and paintings of folk ensembles by Slovak artists Mária Auerová - Griešová. Afterwards, Lindsay Davison, a Scot living in Poland, will lead a workshop on bagpipe playing. At 15:00 that day, the bagpipers will play in Wadowice's Main Square. Then at 19:00, young players will meet in Oravská Polhora for a bagpipe competition. The festival continues at the Arena of Bagpipers at 21:30.
